Autumn term
English
Key texts: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
Key writing skills for mastery: including a mixture of simple, compound and complex sentences in our writing; using and understanding a range of subordinate and main clauses and the punctuation that separates them; using expanded clauses and phrases; using relative clauses with different relative pronouns and punctuation to indicate them.
Examples of key opportunities for writing: setting descriptions, informal letter, balanced argument.
This half term we have been writing balanced arguments about whether Father was right to sell Joey the horse to the army. To prepare for writing we performed a courtroom drama where Albert's father defended hi decision to sell Joey.
Maths
This term we are working on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, area and perimeter and statistics.
Examples of skills learnt in these units: understanding the value of each digit in numbers to 1 million, rounding numbers up to 1 million, adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals, multiplying three-digit by two-digit numbers, dividing using the bus-stop method, recognising prime, square and cube numbers, finding the area and perimeter of compound shape and reading tables and line graphs.
RE
This term our units are creation, miracles and the sacrament of the sick and Advent. As part of this we will be looking at the beatitudes and the Canticle of Creation and writing our own Canticle of Creation. We will learn about the importance of the sacrament of the sick and looking at some of the miracles that Jesus performed. Finally, in the lead up to Christmas we will be learning about the birth of John the baptist and how Advent helps us to prepare for Christmas.
Science
This term we are leaning about different materials and their properties and reversible and irreversible change. As part of this unit we will be carrying out a number of investigations including finding the best insulating material for a teacher's cup, whether all materials dissolve and how to separate liquids and solids.
Topic
Our topic for this term is World War One. As part of our topic work we will learning about life in the trenches, what the soldiers ate (including making our own soldier's meal), making model trench, creating our own dazzle camouflage patterns, being spies and decoded secret messages, investigating the sinking of the Lusitania and creating memorial sculptures.
PE
In PE this term we will be doing athletics skills and developing our running and throwing skills and as part of our basketball unit, we will be working on our dribbling and passing skills.
Home Learning
As our school is closed for the foreseeable future, we will be updating our page regularly to provide children with new learning activities each day. We will upload a daily PowerPoint which contains an English and Maths lesson as well as an additional task linked to our usual afternoon lessons. The lessons should appear each morning after 8.30 am.
Children have been provided with an exercise book to complete these activities in. Don't panic if for some reason you don't have an exercise book. Just use any paper that you do have.
You can also find some additional resources that may be useful over the next few weeks if you would like some extra work.
