Rising 3s

Welcome to Rising Threes

Starting Saint Wulstan's as a rising three is an exciting step in your child’s early years journey and we are delighted to welcome you and your child into our school community. Our rising three provision offers a nurturing, gentle transition into nursery life, where children feel safe, loved and supported as they grow in confidence and independence.Children are able to join our nursery as a rising three the term after they turn three.  We have two intakes for the rising three provision, starting in the Spring and Summer terms, with a limited number of places.

Guided by our Catholic values of love, care, kindness and respect, we work closely with families to ensure every child feels secure and happy during this exciting stage. This information hub is here to support you, offering clear and reassuring guidance about what to expect and how we care for your child every day.

Your Child’s Rising Three Journey

Before Starting

We understand that preparation helps children and parents feel confident and reassured. Before your child begins Saint Wulstan's as a Rising Three, you will receive clear information about start dates, induction opportunities and what your child will need each day. This helps ensure a calm and positive start for everyone.

The First Few Weeks

Children settle into Rising Three at their own pace. During the first weeks, staff focus on building secure and trusting relationships, supporting emotional well being and helping children become familiar with Nursery routines.

We work closely with parents and carers during this time, sharing how your child is settling and celebrating small but important milestones together.

Life in Rising Three

Children enjoy a range of carefully planned, play‑based experiences that reflect their interests and stage of development. Through play, exploration and routine, children begin to develop confidence, communication skills and early independence within a nurturing and faith‑filled environment.

You can find our Nursery Curriculum here to see what your child will be learning at Saint Wulstan's.

A Day as a Rising Three

Our Rising Three day is calm, structured and flexible, designed to meet the needs of younger children while gently introducing Nursery routines.

Throughout the day, children enjoy:

  • Time to explore and play independently and with friends
  • Daily phonics in small family groups
  • Familiar routines that build a sense of security
  • Shared snack and meal times that support independence and social skills
  • Outdoor play and physical activity
  • Stories, songs and small group times

Working Together with Families

We believe that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Strong partnerships with families are essential in supporting children during the transition into Rising Three.

We keep parents informed through regular communication and informal conversations. If you ever have a question, concern or moment you wish to share, our team is always happy to listen and support you.

We use our online learning journal, Tapestry to share your child's learning and progress with you. As a parent, you are able to use Tapestry to share your child's achievements at home with us in school too.

Questions Parents Often Ask

What if my child finds settling difficult?
This is very normal at this age. Our staff are experienced in supporting younger children and will provide comfort and reassurance throughout the day. We will keep you informed and work closely with you during this time, we know that this can be a tough time for parents as well as children.

What if my child is upset when I leave?
It is very common for children to feel anxious at first. Staff are highly experienced in helping children settle and will always support them with kindness and reassurance. Parents will be contacted if a child does not settle after a reasonable amount of time.

Are Rising Three's part of Nursery?
Yes. Our Rising Three group is part of our Nursery provision and takes place within the main Nursery environment, supporting familiarity, consistency and a smooth transition.

How will I know how my child is doing?
We regularly share information about your child’s experiences, well being and progress through our online learning journal, Tapestry.  We encourage open communication at all times.

What should my child bring to Nursery?

Your child should bring:

  • A named coat
  • Spare clothes (including underwear) in a kit bag to be left in school
  • A book bag on Tuesday's for library books
  • Your child should come to school in PE kit on Wednesdays for our PE session.

Please ensure everything is clearly labelled.

What if my child needs help with toileting?

Staff will support children sensitively with toileting routines. We encourage children to be as independent as possible, but help is always available. Accidents are treated calmly and discreetly, and parents will be informed if needed.  If you child is currently in nappies, please see a member of the team who will be able to offer guidance and support for toilet training.
