Key texts: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. 

Key writing skills for mastery:

  • Using extended noun phrases (two adjectives separated by a comma preceeding a noun) e.g. the glistening, mesmerising lake
  • Using powerful verbs (verbs which add more description) e.g. pounce, race, creep 
  • Using noun phrases, adjectives and adverbs used to create interest
  • Using fronted and adverbials with a comma placed correctly e.g. Unexpectedly, Surprisingly, All of a sudden,

Key opportunities for writing: character descriptions, non-chronological report on a mythical beast, letters as characters. 

Our Creative Fridays have inspired the children to write some great pieces of work, including a description on Diagon Alley and a non-chronological report on trolls!  (video and picture)

 

Maths

This year there is a statutory timestables test at the end of Year 4. To help your child to learn and practise their timestables, each child has a timestables book. Lessons are often practical and allow daily opportunities for reasoning which allow the children to apply any mathematical concepts into an everyday context.

This term we are learning all about the Romans. We have done lots of enquiry-based learning to find out about them. Why don't you ask your child about one of the questions we have explored?

How did Roman everyday life compare to now?

Why did the Romans decorate their homes?

What entertainment was available in the Roman times?

We are doing lots of art and design work to explore and understand the Romans and to help us with our writing in English.

  • Use precise vocabulary (non-fiction)
  • Use more than one clause in writing - embedded clauses.

Key opportunities for writing: Character descriptions, letter to the authorities, diary entry of Paris, explanation text - How to be a Rooftopper.

History and Geography

 This term we are learning all about Europe. By the end of the term your child should be able to identify lots of different countries in Europe and tell you some very interesting facts!

These are some of the questions that we are exploring this term:

What is Europe?

How are European countries similar and different?

Who are some of the most famous artists from Europe? What did they do?

How have European cities been inspired by artists?

 

Art and Design and Technology

  • Explore the work of Gaudi and create a design inspired by him. 
  • Who is Van Gogh? What work did he create?
  • Explore how colour is used to create mood through paintings.

We are very fortunate to have BEE Active for some of our PE sessions this term who have been doing lots of work on team building and inspiring us to take part in sport.

English

Key texts: Anglo-Saxon Boy, Beowulf

Key writing skills for mastery:

  • Using inverted commas to punctuate speech - learning about all of the punctuation required for speech.

Key opportunities for writing: Narrative of conversation between brothers, persuasive letter to join the Anglo-Saxon Army, explanation of how to be a warrior, diary entry of the life of a Viking.

R.E

This year Year 4 will be making their First Holy Communion as they were unable to do so last year. A lot of our lessons will focus on preparing the children for this sacrament and supporting them through the journey.

Science

In science this term we are learning about Living Things and Their Habitats. We are going to be learning how to classify different animals and what wildlife is common in our local area.

 History and Geography

Our topic this term is Anglo-Saxon's and Vikings. We will be doing lots of lessons to explore who these invaders were and how they lived their lives in England. 

Some of enquiries will look into:

Who were the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings? Where did they come from?

What was every day life like for them?

What happened in England during that period of time?

Who were the key historic figures?

What battles were fought? 

 

Art and Design and Technology

  • Sketch ideas and annotate designs.
  • Make models using clay
  • Use a number of textures to build up a piece.
