Summer 1 Maths

Monday 20th April

To begin with, let's have a quick recap of the angle unit which you started to study before Easter. Look through my slideshow below, then click the link to take you to today's lesson.

We are up to week 2, lesson 5- Calculate Angles. Remember to watch the video and complete the worksheet! https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

Today you will be looking at vertically opposite angles. You will find this on the White Rose website under 'Summer term, week 1 (w/c 20th April). This is lesson 1.

Follow the link, watch the video and complete the activity. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

After, look through the recap PowerPoint an try the challenges!

Wednesday 22nd April

Today we are looking at Summer Term Week 1, lesson 2. This lesson is about angles in a triangle. You may already know what the angles in a triangle add up to- have a think before you begin the lesson.

Follow the link to access the lesson video and activities. Then, as usual, look through my recap slides and try the challenges!

Thursday 23rd April

Today we are going to look at summer term, week 1, lesson 3. This is angles in a triangle- special cases. We will be looking specifically at isosceles triangles. Have a think before you begin, what are they? What defines an isosceles triangle?

Again, follow the link, complete the video and activities and recap with my slides. Then finish with the challenges.

Today you will use all of your knowledge to solve some challenging missing angle questions. We are up to summer 1, week 1, lesson 4- angles in a triangle- missing angles. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

I am not going to put a recap slide on. However, I have attached a really difficult challenge for those of you feeling extra mathematical today!!!

Monday 27th April

Today we are going to look at summer term, week 2, lesson 1. This is angles in special quadrilaterals. Have a think before you begin, what are quadrilaterals? Can you remember what the word 'quad' means? Think about a quad bike!

Again, follow the link, complete the video and activities and recap with my slides. Then finish with the challenge on my slides!

Today we are going to look at summer term, week 2, lesson 2. This is angles in polygons. Remember to watch the video first, then complete the activity. Today you might want to use my recap slides to help you with the activity. If you find the activity on the White Rose website a little tricky, hopefully the slides will help. I have also placed the answers to the challenges on this slide today.

Wednesday 29th April

Today we are going to concentrate on consolidating your learning. This means that we are going to go over lots of the different  angle knowledge you have learned so far.

You don't need the White Rose website today. I would like you to follow my slides, answering the questions as you go, then complete the challenge at the end.

Today you are going to look at problem solving (Summer- week 2- lesson 3. This will use a mixture of all of your knowledge you've learnt so far at school and at home! The video is the same as the worksheet today. This means that for each question you have, there is an explanation to go with it. Once you have completed the problems on the video, have a go at my challenges!https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

For the next two weeks, we will be looking at fractions. Hopefully, you will be able to remember some of the work which we did on this before and after Christmas.  Some of it is quite similar, but it is really important that we consolidate our learning!

Follow the link- We are now looking at Summer- week 3- lesson 1 (Simplify fractions) https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

As usual, watch the video, complete the activity and then recap using my slides!

Today we will be looking at ordering fractions. If you remember, we did this and got used to it by changing the denominators to make them the same. Today, I want you to really try and visualise what they fractions look like in order to help you order them. This helps you get a better understanding.

Wednesday 6th May

Today we will be looking at  adding fractions. Again, we did this in school and have done a lot in layout and solve. Similar to yesterday, try and visualise what the fractions look like and why they need to be changed in order to add or subtract. If you find this a little tricky, refer back to our method of making the denominators the same!

Thursday 7th May

Today we will be looking at  some fraction problems using addition and subtraction.  Today, I have not created an extra slide show. I would like you to work through the White Rose video slowly as it is quite tricky today. You could have a go at the questions by pausing the video, before he begins to explain. Good Luck!

There will be no lesson tomorrow (8th May) as it is bank holiday. However, if you really want to do some Maths, follow the link above to find the Maths challenges!

Monday 11th May

Today we are looking at multiplying fractions. We have done this in class and often you see it on the layout and solve. In our Layout and Solve we usually use a very quick method but whilst you are doing today's lesson, try and challenge yourself to draw out what is happening.  You will not be able to access the sheets on the website today and so you will find them below (be aware- the top file is the answer sheet so don't open that first).

You will still need to watch the video link first.

We are on summer term, week 4, lesson 1- multiplying fractions by integers-https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

I have done an extra slide show again with extra questions and challenges. Good Luck :)

Tuesday 12th May

Today you will be multiplying a fraction by a fraction. Again, we have a really quick method of doing this but try challenging yourself by using bars! Today, I'd like you to look through my slides before watching the video and completing the worksheets. Remember the worksheets are on here not on the White Rose site.

Wednesday 13th May

Today you will be dividing fractions. Again this is something we have covered in class this year. There are two different methods. One is our very quick method which we use in our layout and solve. The other method is about changing a numerator so that it is divisible by the whole number. This requires bar models. Again, it's important that you try and understand it this way so that you have a really deep understanding.

Watch the video, complete the worksheet and then look through my slideshow. There is a challenge at the end.

Thursday 14th May

Today is finding fractions of amounts. We have done a lot of this in layout and solve and it's important that you use a bar model. This really helps. Work through the video and then the questions. When you get to the slides, I have added in some SAT's questions for you to have a go at. The answers are on the slides too.

Good luck!

Today you are going to be looking at dividing and multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000. We have done lots of work on this but this is excellent revision ready for High School.  I'd like you to watch the video, complete the worksheet and then open my slide show. On here, I have again, put some specific SATS questions followed by the answers.

Also, one game I really enjoy playing is countdown. This is a great game where you can practice using multiplication and division knowledge. Here is the link... why not see if you can beat your parents?

Today we will be looking at multiplying decimals. We have again, done this in class. Today, I'd like you to read through my slide show before watching the video and answering the questions. This is because it has some questions on which should be familiar to you.

Wednesday 20th May

Today you will be dividing decimals by whole numbers. We have done this before in class and we used decimal place value counters to do this. It shows really good understanding if you can do this. I have added a quick video today, rather than a recap flip just to remind you of how we did this in class!

Watch my video first, then watch the White Rose video- https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

Finally, complete the worksheet.

Thursday 21st May

Today you will be looking at turning decimals into fractions. We did a lot of this in class and the important thing to remember is that we write decimals out of either...

tenths= 1/10    hundredths= 1/100 or thousandths= 1/1000

If you see a fraction, to change it into a decimal, again, we have to make it out of...

tenths= 1/10    hundredths= 1/100 or thousandths= 1/1000

I have not done a recap slide show for today, the video explains the concept in a very similar way to what we do in school. However, I have added some SATs questions for you to have a go at after you have completed the worksheet.

Good Luck!
